Flutes

Bamboo is a completely sustainable crop. Each culm no matter how big has reached its size in a single growing season. It has to stand for at least a year to be suitable for flute making. So all of the culms taken for flute making are already being replaced by the new growth. It's as green as it gets. My flutes are not authentic. Native American Flutes are usually made from Cedar and not Bamboo. I am adapting the Native American System to produce an easy to play instrument. If you want the genuine article you must seek out a flutemaker from that culture.

This does not mean that my flutes will not sound authentic. I want you to take your flute on holiday in your rucksack, or put it in the glove box of your car when you go out. If you don't have it with you you won't be able to play it. My flutes are very strong and durable. Whilst I don't recomend you do the same I have tested my flutes by leaving them on radiators over night, in the back window of my car in summer and taking them from a hot car out into a cold winter's day. They have never cracked. If I could not play my flutes out in nature it would reduce the pleasure I get from them. As a matter of course I finish my flutes with high gloss polurathane varnish inside and out. It's durable and you never have to think about it again. If you want an oiled flute or even an untreated one to finish yourself just specify that when ordering.

I try to make flutes in harmony with the way each culm has grown. Finishing as close as possible just below the terminal node as this is the strongest part of the Bamboo. Sometimes to make a flute in a specific key requires the use of a sound hole underneath the flute and above the terminal node. This shortens the effective length of the bore and gives a higher key note than would otherwise be possible. This is normal practice amongst flute makers.

The links on the top left of this page will tell you a little more about the different kinds of flute I make. Check them out and see which kind of flute best suits your needs. E-mail me at enquiry@hummingbirdflutes.co.uk
