What We Do

Welcome to Hummingbird Flute's. Based in Bretagne France and making Bamboo Flutes. I make Side Blown and Native American flutes from entirely local materials. Each flute is heat cured and guaranteed for life against cracking under normal use. The flutes can be indivdualy tailored to your requirements or you can take one of my five hole stock flutes.

Since Bamboo has a natural bore, no 2 flutes even exactly tuned together can be the same, each flute will have its own life and character. This is the whole attraction of these flutes. You will have an in tune instrument like no other.

I grow the Bamboo or collect it locally , I snorkel for the abalone shell I use for inlays at a beach 15km from my home and the box wood used to make the bird for the Native American flutes is a 50yr old specimen that grows in my garden and has been harvested and seasoned by me.

This website is designed to offer you the opportunity to purchase one of these beautiful custom made flutes to your personal specification or to access free my 'How to Make a Flute doc' and have a go yourself. I hope you enjoy looking through the various sections on the site and listening to the enchanting sound samples made by these flutes. I welcome all email enquiries at enquiry@hummingbirdflutes.co.uk You can also check out my Gite web site.

 Hi Ian,
I've found a long bit of dowel to clean it out with - probably best to look after things properly, especially as it makes such a wonderful sound. I'm not really familiar with the pentatonic scale, and getting the hang of it. What I'm really enjoying is how much more expressive it is than my normal flute - how close your fingers are to the holes changes the sound, and how you put them on and off, and it's much easier to do twiddly bits than on a flute with keys. I sometimes play the tin whistle, but the pitch is higher. With this flute and the lower pitch it's like there's more space to play with. And the shell in the end is a beautiful touch!

Best wishes

Justin
